We can get real fussy when it comes to the things that we choose to put inside of our bodies, but it’s easy to forget the things we use around them. The chemicals found in household products can actually be more hazardous for one’s health than the unhealthiest, heart clogging thing to eat. Just pick up a cleaning bottle you use and check out the label, does it sound good for you?
These D.I.Y products are necessary for a truly healthy lifestyle. Plus, they’re super easy and will end up saving you lots of money;
The problem with commercial toothpaste is that it contains chemicals and properties that can cause more harm than good. Like fluoride for example, which is an additive that has not been proven to prevent tooth decay but has shown negative affects on the brain. There are detergents that can cause gum irritation and permanent damage over time. Also, why trust something that says *DO NOT SWALLOW* *CALL POISON CONTROL IF CONSUMED*
On that note here’s something you can make at fraction of the price and a healthy chemical/fluoride-free way to keep your teeth clean and strong;
Homemade Coconut Clay Toothpaste
- 4 Tablespoons Coconut oil -whipped or melted
- 2 Tablespoons Calcium Bentonite Clay -made from volcanic ash
- 2 Tablespoons Baking Soda
- 1/2 Teaspoon Liquid Stevia
- 10-15 Drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
Just combine everything and adjust the wet (coconut oil) to dry ingredients until you have the consistency you’d like. Place in a glass jar then just dip the bristles of your toothbrush in it. You can add water to make it smoother, but this shortens the shelf life.
2. Shaving Cream
I’m sure you never thought twice about your shaving cream being a hazard to your health, but the truth is… IT IS. Containing some of the same ingredients found in antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline, not only is the stuff a skin irritant but has been linked to cancer. I’m keeping it FAR away from my skin.
Luckily there’s a non-irritating, skin-smoothing, bump-free option that is great for a man’s face and woman’s legs alike. Very gentle for sensitive skin and for people with eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and other skin issues;
Skin Softening Shaving Cream
- 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
- 1/2 cup Shea Butter
- Any natural, essential oils that you would like to choose as your scent-Lavender, Orange, Rose, etc.
Place all ingredients in a double boiler on low until everything melts together, then place in a jar and voila!
3. All Purpose Cleaner
Created to kill anything in its path, it makes sense companies will cover your counter tops, windows, floors, bathrooms, bedrooms etc with the meanest chemicals around to make sure it strips away everything else in the process. Including your skin, eyes, nose, and health. These products contains very harsh chemicals such as:
- Ethelyne glycol monobuytl acetate
- Sodium hypochlorite
- Trisodium phosphate
A much safer alternative than your traditional all-purpose cleaners such as Clorox and Swiffer solutions. Stop breathing in those chemical fumes and use this simple, cheap recipe instead;
Citrus Vinegar All Purple Cleaner
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- Orange Peels
Let this mixture marinate for 2 weeks. Strain and then dilute with equal parts water. Add to a bucket for mop-dipping or a spray bottle for anytime use at hand.
Common deodorants are filled with numerous chemicals, but mainly aluminum which is a metal that blocks your pores from releasing sweat. It has been linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Also commercial deodorants include parabens- synthetic preservatives, petroleum- gasoline, phthalates- synthetic binder. All these linked to causing hormonal imbalances.
For a clog-free, completely natural option;
Coconut Oil Deodorant
Combine baking soda and arrowroot powder and slowly add the coconut oil + essential oils until the texture begins to thicken up and becomes a firm, pliable texture. Either place in an old deodorant container or place in glass jar and apply with fingers.
